How to Find Your Router’s IP Address or Gateway

Are you having trouble finding the default IP address or host address of your router? The default gateway or host IP is one of the necessary steps to configure and modify the settings of your router.

So in this tutorial, we’re going to cover various steps through which you can get your default gateway or host IP of your device. We’re also going to include multiple IP address/gateways of devices along with the router’s brand name.

Depending on the type of device (Linux, Windows, Android, Mac) you’re using, we will cover different steps through which you can check the default gateway.

If you have ever forgotten the default IP address of your router, then here is how you can find the default gateway/host address of your router.

How to Get Default Gateway IP/Host IP

Most of the time the default gateway of a router is 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1. But in case, you have a different gateway, you can try the following methods I shared below to get your default host IP address.

These steps are easy to follow, and you can get default host IP of your router using any end device (Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux) which is connected with your router.

But before proceeding to the below steps, click on the default host address below to make sure if any of the host address works for your router:

How to Find Router’s IP Address on Windows

Step #1: Open CMD (Command Prompt)

If the above IP’s or Gateway doesn’t work for you, then you can try this method to find the default gateway of your router in Windows.

To see the default gateway, you have to open the command prompt.

Together press the “windows key + R” button to open the windows run command. Once the run dialogue box open, type “cmd” and enter.

192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.1

It will open the command line prompt (black screen) through which you can get your default gateway.

Step #2: The “ipconfig/all” Command

Once you opened the command prompt (CMD), enter the “ipconfig/all” command in the given box.

192.168.0.1, 192.168.o.1, 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.1

Once you hit enter, it will show you some necessary information including your IP address, your default gateway, DHCP server, and several other details. (Check the image shown below)

Just copy the IP address shown at default gateway and open in the browser. In my case the default gateway is 192.168.31.1, So I’ll have to open this IP address in my browser for configuration.

How to Find the Router’s IP Address on Android

If you’re an Android user, you can perform these steps to find the default gateway of your routers IP address.

Step #1: Connect to Wifi Network

The first step you need to follow is to connect with the wifi network of your router. Once you’re connected with the router’s network, open wifi setting page.

Go to “Settings > Wifi > Long Press/Tap on Wifi Network you’re connected with > Open ‘Advance Setting’ 

Once you opened the wifi setting, long press or tap on your connected router’s name to open an advance setting page.

Step #2: Find Host or Gateway in Advance Setting

Once you opened the advance setting in your mobile device, it will show the “IP Address, Gateway, and Several other information.

Just copy the IP address shown at default gateway and open in the browser. In my case the default gateway is 192.168.31.1,

So I’ll have to open 192.168.31.1 IP address in my browser for router’s configuration.

How to Find Router’s IP Address on Mac

If you’re a Mac User, you can perform the below steps to find the default IP address of your router. The steps are same in all version of Mac OSX.

Step #1: Open “Internet & Wireless” Setting

If the above IP’s or Gateway doesn’t work for you, then you can try this method to find the default gateway of your router in Windows.

To see the default gateway, you have to open the “System Preference” from the Apple Menu.

Once you opened the “System Preference”, Click on “Network Setting” under “Internet & Wireless” setting.

Step #2: Open TCP/IP Setting Under Wifi Network

Once you opened the “Network Setting”, click on the “Wifi” option or whatever network interface you are connected through and click on the “Advanced” button in the lower right corner

Under Advanced Setting, click on the “TCP/IP” option from the top choice.

Now, you’ll see something like above image. Copy the  routers IP address is the numerical address next to “Router:” and will look something like: 192.168.1.1

How to Find Router’s IP Address on Linux

If you’re a linux user, you can perform the following steps to find the default gateway of your router.

Step #1: Open Terminal

If the above IP’s or Gateway doesn’t work for you, then you can try this method to find the default gateway of your router in Linux.

To see the default gateway, you have to open the terminal.

Together press the “CTRL + T” button to open the terminal. Once the terminal is opened you need to type the below command to get your router’s IP address.

It will open the terminal (black screen) through which you can get your default gateway.

Step #2: The “ip route | grep default” Command

Once you opened the terminal, enter the “ip route | grep default” command in the given box and hit enter.

Once you hit enter the below screen will appear. It will show something “default via 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 proto static” on screen.

Just copy the IP address shown at default gateway and open in the browser. In my case the default gateway is 192.168.31.1, So I’ll have to open this IP address in my browser for configuration.

Default Gateway/Host IP of Routers

The default IP addresss of a router is 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1 (any). Most of the router use this IP address as their default host address.

All around the Globe router and modem manufacture like  Tenda, TP-Link, Linksys uses some default IP address to access their devices configuration panels.

These IP addresses are also known as host address which is used to configure the default setting of any routers or modem setting.

How to Fix Obtaining IP Address Issue in Wifi Router?

Are you getting an issue of not “obtaining IP address error” in your device? This error occurs when the wifi router isn’t able to provide an IP address for your device or face any issue in providing an IP address.

To solve this type of problems in your device, either set your wifi router to provide “DHCP IP” addresses to the device or follow these steps to register static IP in your router.

To register a static IP in the router;

Go to “Settings > Wifi > Long Press/Tap on Wifi Network you’re connected with > Open ‘Advance Setting’ > and click on ‘IP Setting’ menu“.

In the IP setting, it will show “DHCP,” change “DHCP to Static” and assign any unique IP address between 192.168.1.2 – 192.168.1.254.

For, eg, Add “192.168.1.254” in static IP and save it. (In my case the default gateway is 192.168.31.1, So I’ll set 192.168.31.228)

Why the IP Address isn’t Opening in the Browser?

If the IP address isn’t opening in your browser or it takes a long time in loading, then it might be possible that the IP address you’re opening in your browser isn’t your host address.
